Shiatsu Foundation Workshop – 3 weekends

Foundation Course

Shiatsu is a Japanese therapy, based on the principle that vital energy flows throughout the body in a series of channels called meridians. Shiatsu practitioners use thumb and palm pressure, stretching and other techniques to restore the balance of this energy. Shiatsu is great for the health, wellbeing and vitality of the practitioner as well as for the people who receive it!

This course is full of practical learning that will give you new skills to practice on family and friends. Therapists who already hold a qualification in other treatment modalities may also find this course to be a valuable addition to their continuing professional development.

• Treatment routines for clients in prone, supine, side and sitting positions

• The basic skills of observation and diagnosis using the principles of Traditional Oriental Medicine

Shiatsu Health Point - Shiatsu treatment

My background from finishing University was in social care. I worked in residential and day services with adults with learning disabilities and also in the field of mental ill-health. I practiced Ju-jitsu for over 15 years and also practice yoga. I have been a Shiatsu practitioner for 27 years and ran my own Shiatsu school, the Northern School of Shiatsu for the last 20 years.

I had my first experience of Shiatsu on a six month course at Sheffield University. Following on from this I did 2 years with the Shiatsu College in London. Since then I have done a range of courses and post-grad work with teachers including Pauline Sasaki, Kiko Matsumuto and Clifford Andrews.

I have been a Shiatsu practitioner since 1991. During this time I have ran my own private practice. I have also a wide range of experience working in other fields. I have done placements working with adults with physical disabilities for Sheffield City Council. I have also worked in substance misuse services. For the last two years of my time in Sheffield I worked at the Cavendish Cancer Care Centre and Weston Park Hospital, offering Shiatsu to cancer patients and their families. Within my private practice people come from all walks of life with a range of physical, emotional and psychological concerns.

For the past 20 years I have ran my own Shiatsu school and taught at Bradford College, Rotherham College and Buxton College.

I offer Shiatsu treatments in Seaton Burn, Newcastle upon Tyne.

I graduated from the Northern School of Shiatsu in July 2018 and currently in the early stages of setting up a Shiatsu practice in Sheffield. Having a background in nursing and education I am passionate about helping people with their own health and wellbeing.

I am 3rd year student Shiatsu practitioner with the Northern School of Shiatsu. I am based and practising in Gairloch in the Scottish Highlands.

Shiatsu is a physical therapy that supports and strengthens the body’s natural ability to heal and balance itself. It works on the whole person – not just with the physical body, but also with the psychological, emotional and spiritual aspects of being.

Shiatsu originated in Japan from traditional Chinese medicine, with influences from more recent Western therapies. Although Shiatsu means ‘finger pressure’ in Japanese, in practice a practitioner uses touch, comfortable pressure and manipulative techniques to adjust the body’s physical structure and balance its energy flow. It is a deeply relaxing experience and regular treatments can alleviate stress and illness and maintain health and well-being.

I trained for 3 years at the Northern School of Shiatsu.

I began my Shiatsu journey in 2015, enrolling on the Foundation Course with the Northern School of Shiatsu in Sheffield. I had received a single Shiatsu treatment from a friend who was completing the three-year Diploma and I was instantly intrigued. The treatment felt wonderful, and was different from anything I had experienced.

I was drawn to the process of self-development and self-healing that Shiatsu could offer me. I graduated from the Northern School in 2018 and therefore have over three years’ experience giving and receiving this restorative and unique form of therapy. From January to July 2018, I undertook a voluntary placement at the Well Women Centre in Wakefield, allowing women on a low income to access treatment they would not ordinarily be able to experience. In August 2018 I became the third Director of In Touch Massage and Holistic Therapies CIC, a social enterprise which aims to make holistic therapies accessible to everyone, including minority, socially excluded and low income groups.

I am constantly developing the practical and theoretical application of Shiatsu, and my knowledge, confidence and professionalism are growing at a remarkable speed. My professional background prior to discovering Shiatsu was very varied. I worked in the fields of publishing, communications, international relations, mental health, housing, advocacy, law and education.

I live in Morley in south Leeds and I have a two-year-old baby girl.
