I am 3rd year student Shiatsu practitioner with the Northern School of Shiatsu. I am based and practising in Gairloch in the Scottish Highlands.

I am a Zen Shiatsu practitioner who  studied Shiatsu at the British School of Shiatsu-Do and the Genki School of Shiatsu for three years, qualifying in 2003 and in private and on-site seated Shiatsu practice since then. Additionally I was a Teaching Assistant at the BSS-Do for two years and Senior Teaching Assistant at the Genki School for four years. As a Senior Teaching Assistant I worked closely with the school principal to refine, deepen and develop my own Shiatsu theory and practice while assisting other students in doing the same.
I’ve continued to develop my own practice over subsequent years, adding skills from both the West and the East including Taoist Energetics, Meditation and Healing, Sufi Essence Work and techniques drawn from Ortho-bionomy, biodynamic craniosacral, positional release, neuromuscular facilitation and a number of others.

Empty Wheel Shiatsu is the natural evolution of this training and experience, a form of healing and therapy rooted in the ancient practices of Taoism but which has grown, over two decades of personal development and continuous study, to take in understanding and methods from Western physical therapies, Sufism, Buddhism, Diamond Logos Essence work and others.

The majority of my clients come looking for help with a specific problem but, over the course of their treatments, they quickly realise that Shiatsu aids their life in unexpected and valuable ways and it is these factors that keep them coming back to Shiatsu and deepening their own health and resources through an ongoing process of healing and exploration.

Over the past two decades I have found Shiatsu to be an effective treatment helping clients with a range of difficulties. Shiatsu may help with:

  • Stress and its effects
  • Muscle and joint problems (aches, pains, tension, and injury)
  • Migraine and headaches
  • Back pain and spinal alignment
  • Life transitions (including retirement, bereavement, conception and others)
  • Processing difficult emotions
  • Safely holding and releasing trauma (including PTSD and complex PTSD)
  • Jaw problems (including TMJ issues)
  • Neck and shoulder pain
  • Breathing difficulties
  • Anxiety and panic attacks
  • Insomnia and other sleeping difficulties
  • Recovering from injury and surgery

I have found that the best approach to healing is to treat each client as a whole that encompasses the fullness of their Being. As such, we (client and practitioner) look to integrate body, mind, and soul in order to manifest the innate healing power that exists in us all. When that power manifests we feel stronger, more capable, more grounded, more relaxed, and life develops a sense of ease and comfort. These qualities come to permeate every aspect of our lives, transforming not just our own inner sense and understanding but also transforming our lives and relationships in subtle and profound ways. We come to know ourselves and our life in a new way.

While Shiatsu is on par with many Western physical therapies in treating physical ailments (muscular and skeletal problems for example) it can take us deeply into the felt sense of our experience to reveal our deepest inner capacities, restoring energy and vitality that can be manifest in every aspect of our life to the benefit of ourselves, our families, and our friends.

I am an experienced Shiatsu practitioner in Bristol. I trained for 3 years with the Bristol School of shiatsu, also a yoga teacher, masseuse and nutritional therapist.  I will soon be fully qualified to offer kinesiology as well.

I offer Shiatsu from:

  • The Wellbeing Therapy Rooms, Hamilton House, 80 Stokes Croft, BS1 3QY
  • The Practice Rooms, 24 Regent Street, Clifton, BS8 4HG or 39 Cotham Hill, Bristol, BS6 6JY
  • I also do home/office visits and am available for events.

As well as encouraging you to relax deeply and access your innate capacity for healing I also seek to empower you to take control of your life and your own wellbeing. I will share my knowledge of healing through breathing techniques, nutrition, meditation etc. Healing for me is the movement back to wholeness or integration of what seem like fragmented parts of our Being.  It involves acknowledging the hidden and perhaps more ‘uncomfortable’ aspects of ourselves and welcoming them as part of our authentic self. Each experience of Shiatsu is unique.

I also specialise in Shiatsu for Pregnancy, Childbirth and Post-Natal Recovery.

Shiatsu is wonderfully supportive for a woman journeying through the different stages of pregnancy. It can be applied safely and effectively to support a woman to feel at ease physically, mentally and emotionally. Shiatsu may provide relief from nausea, lower backache, shoulder tension, difficulties in breathing, constipation, anxiety, oedema, post-natal depression and fatigue. I have studied pregnancy Shiatsu with Suzanne Yates from the Wellmother School and have supported a number of women during pregnancy and beyond and found it to be very nourishing and beneficial.

Please feel free to contact me for an informal 10 minute chat. We can then organise a session for you.

Details of my special offers can be found on my website.

Testimonials:

“I have suffered with IBS for years and after finding prescribed medication and diet change was not working I looked into alternative therapies. I had 5 sessions of shiatsu and have found it to have had an enourmous effect on my symptoms. It has made me understand the connection between my emotions, largely stress and worry, and the issues with my stomach.Shiatsu with Lioba gave me the tools to learn to relax and to break the connection between negative emotions and my physical well being. It was the first time I had ever had shiatsu and knew very little about it but I would most definately have treatments again. After the treatments having such a profound effect on my symptoms“ – Cath, Support Worker (Bristol)

Lioba has an amazing gift for body work. I always leave the room feeling lighter, unburdened and with energy flowing again. She creates a wonderfully warm and safe space to open up. As an asthmatic she has helped me become more in tune with the areas of my body which can become tense and cause my asthma to worsen. I wholeheartedly recommend Lioba“. (Heg, singer-songwriter, Bristol)

My first Shiatsu massage was blissfully relaxing. I left feeling affected in a deep way, very different to how I feel when I normally receive a massage. I’m certain to return.” Richie, Engineer (Melbourne)

Lioba’s Shiatsu sessions are thorough, personal and friendly and she combines great knowledge with intelligent hands. There is always plenty of good advice, reassurance and never any pressure to come back. I feel qualified to thoroughly recommend her treatments“- Rupert, Sports Massage Therapist (Bristol)

I have a degree in Complementary & Holistic Therapies and have been a qualified Shiatsu Practitioner for 12 years in private practice and with Derby Women’s Centre. Emanating from my work at the Women’s Centre was a desire to deepen my practice working with trauma so I undertook a PGdip in Person Centred & Experiential Psychotherapy.  I have a deeply held belief that therapies should be affordable for all. In response to this belief and passion I have set up Elephant Rooms, a ‘not for profit’ social enterprise venture in Draycott, Derbyshire specialising in the provision of a safe and tranquil environment for the promotion of community health and wellbeing.  The vision is:

To provide a diverse range of natural therapies, classes and workshops promoting health and wellbeing for the local community.
The objective is to provide something for everyone; a wide range of therapies and treatments across the spectrum focused on natural health and wellbeing.

Shiatsu is a physical therapy that supports and strengthens the body’s natural ability to heal and balance itself. It works on the whole person – not just with the physical body, but also with the psychological, emotional and spiritual aspects of being.

Shiatsu originated in Japan from traditional Chinese medicine, with influences from more recent Western therapies. Although Shiatsu means ‘finger pressure’ in Japanese, in practice a practitioner uses touch, comfortable pressure and manipulative techniques to adjust the body’s physical structure and balance its energy flow. It is a deeply relaxing experience and regular treatments can alleviate stress and illness and maintain health and well-being.

I trained for 3 years at the Northern School of Shiatsu.
